Iréna Kennedy / Inner City Art Studio
Technical skill and understanding of art materials in the heart of the city
About
Located on level 2 of the Mybar Building, 85 Victoria Street, Inner City Art Studio is run by Iréna Kennedy to teach technical skill and understanding of art materials and application to both children and adult students. For the first time Iréna is opening her personal studio for the duration of open studio. Iréna will be working on sculptural pieces alongside running workshop events. See Instagram for details.
Iréna Kennedy holds an MFA in sculpture and has been working with clay in her contemporary arts practice for over 14 years. Her ceramic work has been selected and shown in the Substation Contemporary Art Awards in Melbourne and the Portage Ceramics Awards in Aotearoa. Iréna has exhibited in Melbourne, Thailand, and across Aotearoa, and has been on artist residencies in both Thailand and Aotearoa. Her interest in clay lies in the structural medium and how this can be applied to objects and the discourse of the material through hand building methods. Iréna has worked in film at both Wētā Workshop and Stone Street Studios in the art department, and more recently completed two large scale clay sculptured incensarios for the Mayan scenes in the recently released Time Bandits. Three years ago Irena set up Inner City Art Studio after seeing the need for technical artistic skill to be taught. Iréna runs beginners and intermediate classes in ceramics and other mediums for both adults and children so that people can develop their own ceramics practice with the technical knowledge needed.
